What Is a Moving Head Light? How It Works & What It's Used For

A moving head light is a stage fixture whose head sits on a motorised yoke, so it can pan about 540° and tilt about 270° on command. It also changes colour, pattern and beam width remotely. One moving head can light a singer, sweep the crowd and project a logo within seconds. On stagify.ae, moving heads start at AED 400.

This guide is for UAE event companies, DJs, venues and wedding planners who want to understand moving heads before they buy or hire them. It covers how they work, the main types, where each one is used and the specs worth checking. It sits under our stage lighting guide, which covers every fixture family.

Stagify is a UAE online store for professional stage lighting and stage equipment, delivering across all seven emirates.

Key takeaways

  • A moving head is a light on motors: pan, tilt, colour, pattern, focus and zoom all change by remote control, usually over DMX512.

  • There are four main types: beam (tight shaft), spot (sharp patterns), wash (soft colour) and hybrid (all three in one).

  • Prices on stagify.ae run from AED 400 for a 60W LED mini beam to AED 5,205 for a 17R 460W hybrid.

  • The spec that matters most is output at a stated distance (lux at metres), not the wattage alone.

  • Hung moving heads need a rated clamp and a safety cable, and beams need haze to show in the air.

What is a moving head light?

A moving head light is an automated stage fixture with a light source, colour and pattern optics, and motors inside a head that rotates on a yoke. A lighting desk tells it where to point and what to look like, so a single operator can run dozens of fixtures. No one has to climb up and re-aim it by hand.

Three things make a fixture a moving head rather than a fixed light:

  1. Movement. Two motors turn the head: pan (left and right, typically 540°) and tilt (up and down, typically 270°).

  2. Remote effects. Colour, pattern (gobo), prism, focus and often zoom are changed from the desk, not by hand.

  3. Control. Every function is a DMX channel, so the fixture can be programmed into scenes and cues.

Fixed fixtures, such as LED PARs, only change colour and brightness. Moving heads add position and shape, which is why they are the main effect light at concerts, weddings and club shows across the UAE.

How does a moving head light work?

A moving head works by sending light from a lamp or LED through a chain of optics (colour wheel, gobo wheel, prism, then a focus and zoom lens) while two motors aim the head. A DMX512 signal from the desk sets each function to a value from 0 to 255, so the fixture changes position and look on cue.

How a moving head light works (Stagify diagram, October 2026).

Part

What it does

Base

Holds the power supply, display, control board and DMX in and out connectors

Yoke

The U-shaped arm the head hangs in. The pan motor turns it left and right

Head

Holds the light source, optics and tilt motor

Light source

A discharge lamp (for example a 7R or 17R bulb) or an LED engine

Colour wheel or mixing

Dichroic colour filters on a wheel, or RGBW LEDs that mix colour

Gobo wheel

Metal or glass discs that project patterns; rotating gobos also spin

Prism

Splits one beam into several (for example 8 or 24 facets)

Focus and zoom

Lenses that sharpen the pattern and set the beam width

Pan, tilt and DMX channels

Each function uses one or more DMX channels: pan, tilt, colour, gobo, prism, focus, dimmer, strobe and speed. Many fixtures offer a short and a long channel mode. The 230W Mini 7R Beam Moving Head Light, for example, uses 18 channels. Fixtures with 16-bit pan and tilt add a "fine" channel for each, which gives smoother, slower movement.

The desk must support the channel count of your largest fixture. A basic desk that handles 16 channels per fixture cannot fully run an 18-channel head. Our range of DMX lighting controllers covers desks for small and large rigs.

Discharge lamp vs LED

Discharge-lamp moving heads, often called 7R or 17R after the bulb type, give the brightest and tightest beams. The trade-offs are heat, warm-up time and lamp changes. The 230W 7R head above has a lamp life of about 2,000 hours, according to the manufacturer. LED moving heads run cooler, switch on instantly and need no lamp changes, which suits wash and smaller spot fixtures.

What are the types of moving head lights?

The four types of moving head lights are beam, spot, wash and hybrid. A beam head throws a tight shaft of light for aerial effects. A spot projects sharp patterns. A wash spreads soft, even colour. A hybrid does all three in one body. Most rigs mix at least two: wash to light people and beam or spot for effects.

Beam moving heads

Most beam moving head lights use a discharge lamp and a very narrow lens, so the beam stays thin and bright over long distances. The 230W 7R head above throws a 0–3.9° beam, rated by the manufacturer at about 50,000 lux at 20 m. For small rooms and DJ setups, the 60W Mini Moving LED Beam Light (AED 400) is an LED beam with a 14.3° angle, 7 colours, 7 gobos and 9 or 11 DMX channels.

Spot moving heads

A spot head's job is to project a sharp pattern, not a shaft. The 120W Spot LED Moving Head Light For DJ Disco Party (AED 970) has a 120W white LED and a 15° beam, with 7 static and 6 rotating gobos, a 5-facet rotating prism and motorised focus. It weighs 7 kg and runs on 11 or 16 DMX channels.

Wash moving heads

Moving head wash lights use LEDs behind a zoom lens to spread colour across a stage or wall. The 36X10W RGBW LED Zoom Moving Wash Light (AED 960) has 36 × 10W RGBW LEDs and a motorised zoom, and weighs 9 kg. It is the usual choice for wedding stages and conference sets.

Hybrid moving heads

A hybrid combines a beam lens, gobos and a wide zoom in one fixture, so a small rig can create many looks. The 17R 460W Beam Moving Head LIGHT (AED 5,205) has a 17R 460W lamp, a 5–43° motorised zoom, 14 static and 9 rotating gobos, and dual 6- and 8-facet prisms. The manufacturer rates it at 145,000 lux at 10 m. It weighs 20 kg and uses 16 or 20 DMX channels.

Choosing between beam, spot and wash for a particular event, and choosing the right wattage, are covered in the other guides in this moving head series.

Where are moving head lights used?

Moving head lights are used wherever lighting must change during an event: concerts and festivals, wedding entrances and receptions, clubs and DJ sets, corporate launches and award shows, theatre, and hotel ballrooms. Wash heads light stages and people. Beam and spot heads create effects.

These counts are starting points for a typical stage, not fixed rules. Room size, ceiling height and the brief all change them.

What specs should you check on a moving head?

Check six specs before buying a moving head: output at a stated distance (lux at metres), beam or zoom angle, DMX channel count and modes, light source and lamp life, weight and mounting, and noise and cooling. Wattage alone does not tell you how bright the fixture is, and the channel count must fit your desk.

IP rating

IP20 is indoor only; IP65 for outdoor

UAE outdoor events need sealed fixtures

Noise and cooling

Fan or temperature-controlled cooling

Quiet ballrooms and theatre need quieter heads

Two safety rules apply to every moving head. Hang each one with a rated clamp and a separate safety cable, and only from truss rated for the load. And because beam heads are only visible in haze, plan a haze machine with the venue first, since haze can set off smoke detectors.

For transport, a foam-lined case protects the yoke and lens. The Flight Case 2-in-1 for Beam Moving Head Stage Light (AED 655) holds two beam heads on caster wheels.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a moving head and a PAR light?

A PAR light is fixed: it only changes colour and brightness, and someone must aim it by hand. A moving head pans, tilts, zooms and changes patterns by remote control. PARs are cheaper for general colour wash. Moving heads add movement, beams and gobo effects.

How much does a moving head light cost in the UAE?

On stagify.ae, moving heads cost from AED 400 for a 60W LED mini beam to AED 5,205 for a 17R 460W hybrid. A 230W 7R beam is AED 980, a 120W LED spot is AED 970 and a 36 × 10W LED zoom wash is AED 960 (prices as of October 2026).

Do moving head lights need a DMX controller?

Not always. Most moving heads also run in auto, sound-active or master-slave mode, which works for a house party or DJ booth. For weddings, shows and anything with timed cues, use a DMX controller that supports the fixture's channel count, for example 18 channels for a 230W 7R beam head.

How long do moving head lamps last?

Discharge lamps in 7R beam heads last about 2,000 hours according to the manufacturer of the 230W model, then need replacing. LED moving heads have no lamp to change. Keep vents and fans clear so the lamp does not run hot.

Can moving head lights be used outdoors in the UAE?

Only if the fixture is rated IP65 or higher. Most moving heads, including the 17R 460W head (IP20), are indoor only. Outdoors, keep indoor fixtures under a covered stage, away from dew and dust, and out of direct sun before the show.

Why can't I see the beams from my moving head?

Beams are only visible when light hits particles in the air. In a clean room, you see just a spot where the beam lands. Run a haze machine to make beams visible, and agree its use with the venue first.

Which moving head should you choose?

Choose a wash moving head if your main job is lighting people and stages, a beam head for aerial effects at concerts, clubs and entrances, and a spot or hybrid when you need patterns and logos. A common starting point is four wash heads, with beams added for effects. Match every fixture's channel count to your desk before you buy.
